Mountain Area Health Education Center

Buncombe County

The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is one of nine AHEC centers in the NC AHEC Program. MAHEC covers the 16 western most counties in N.C. and serves as the hub of the Western North Carolina HealthLink videoconferencing network. MAHEC operates a fully-integrated distance learning classroom with full-time technician support. MAHEC’s videoconference hub connects to fourteen acute care hospitals via dedicated T-1 links, to ten public health departments via the Internet, to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians health division via the Internet, and to the N.C. PHTIN. MAHEC can also connect with public and private sites via dial-up ISDN lines. This site has been operational since October, 2003.
